Reflections on the Moon Valley Marathon Experience

Reflections on the Moon Valley Marathon Experience

As the eerie stillness of Swakopmund envelops the early morning hour, my alarm pierces through the silence at 5 AM. It’s Easter Weekend, and while the rest of the world slumbers peacefully, I rise with anticipation coursing through my veins. Today is no ordinary Saturday; it's the day of the highly anticipated Moon Valley Marathon.

Slipping into my attire – black tights, a matching tank-top, and my trusty FALKE running socks – I can feel the excitement building with each lace of my running shoes. This event is a once-a-year opportunity, and I'm determined not to miss it.

Stepping outside, a chilly breeze reminds me that I'm far from the familiar comforts of Windhoek. Mist hangs in the air, reminiscent of last year's race day. But instead of dampening my spirits, it only adds to the sense of adventure.

Arriving at the SFC sports ground, the energy is visible. Fellow runners engage in warm-up routines, sipping on coffee or engaging in lively pre-race chatter. Despite my nerves, I'm determined to prove any doubters wrong – including that persistent voice in my head urging me to retreat.

Gathering under the iconic Gondwana Arch, I feel a surge of readiness. The siren signals the start, and we're off. Some dash ahead with purpose, while others, like myself, settle into a steady rhythm, saving every ounce of energy for the challenge ahead.

As Swakopmund fades into the distance, the only sounds are the crunch of gravel beneath my feet and the gentle rustle of trees along the riverbank. Running in solitude, surrounded by nature's greatness, I'm lost in my own thoughts, the kilometres melting away beneath me.

The final stretch proves gruelling, but with the finish line in sight, the sight of my cheering family fills me with renewed vigour. Crossing that line is a triumph, a testament to perseverance in the face of doubt.

The friendly faces of Gondwana employees greet me, their encouragement fuelling my last few steps. Despite the odds, I've conquered the 21-kilometer trail, traversing the moon landscapes, rivers, and suburban streets.

Each year, the Moon Valley Marathon beckons with its unique charm. And as I soak in a well-deserved bubble bath post-race, thoughts of next year's 42-kilometer challenge already dance in my mind. With determination and a year to train, there's no limit to what I can achieve.
